POTENTIAL RUBIACEAE FAMILY IN ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of world death. This disease has the highest prevalence of death in Indonesia in southeast Asia. Diabetes mellitus is mostly found in men compared with women with a ratio of  60:40. Currently there are various cures for diabetes mellitus. So a lot of anti-diabetes drugs in the market but this anti-diabetic drug in the form of synthetic drugs that have considerable side effects. It causes people to switch to alternative medicine. So today there are many industries and researchers who develop traditional medicine as an alternative medicine. The advantages of traditional medicine in the form of side effects are so small that many people are turning to traditional medicine. One of the plants that can play a role in anti-diabetes is family Rubiaceae. in the last 10 years of research it is known that there are 20 species in the family Rubiaceae that have potential in anti-diabetic activity. Family Rubiaceae generally have secondary metabolite compounds in the form of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenoids, triterpenoids, tannins, anthraquinones, and saponins that play a role in decreasing blood sugar levels in the body.
